More Inspiration.

Here at 623 Studio, we look at a lot of good work and see a lot of talented artists. Recently, we stumbled upon the work of Dana Tanamachi, a graphic designer out of Brooklyn, New York. This lady has talent. I mean, wow!

Random Thought…

I wish I could delete Papyrus from my font collection…but I know that at some point, someone is going to tell me they can’t live without it.

Why I hate Publisher!

It has come to my attention this morning that some people, (not anyone who is serious about design, mind you) but yes, some people, still insist on using Microsoft Publisher!

Let me just remind everybody that Publisher sucks! Not only does any legitimate designer loathe Publisher, and probably doesn’t even have it installed on their computer, but if you try and submit a Publisher file to any professional print company, you will most likely be denied!

As one designer put it so eloquently, “It’s like if you took InDesign, then ripped it’s arms and legs off, and slapped a clown’s nose on it.”

Designers hate this program. Printers hate this program. From a usability standpoint, Publisher is a counter-intuitive, train-wreck of programming, but for some reason, most ‘home designers’ don’t know any better! Using Publisher is like having your sister’s boyfriend’s little brother who once posted an HTML page in ’99, build your Website!

Seriously. Why? Publisher does not equate to appropriate design software. Not under any circumstance. Never. You’re causing yourself a great deal of brain damage, so step away from the Publisher and call yourselves a ‘real’ designer who can ninja some creativity with a little CS5.

Remember, friends don’t let friends use Publisher. Ever. Capish?

Painting on People

Woah! It’s been a while since I’ve had time to post an update! We’ve been swamped with coupon books, logos, and websites! Now, we finally have a moment to breathe, so, for the three people who actually read this blog, we’re finally posting an update! Hooray!
Okay, so a few weeks back, we were doing a little ‘Web Surfing’ when when came across a fine artist with some serious skillz! And we thought this was worth a share…
Enjoy!

7 Fonts that should DIE!

It’s been a while since we’ve had time to write, but it’s Sunday and we had a hot second, so we’re bloggin’! It’s also about time that we addressed something that brings out a certain degree of insanity in us; horribly overused fonts! Now, we’ve known for quite some time that we need to avoid a few ‘choice’ fonts in our designs, for no other reason than they’ve been seen and implemented nearly EVERYWHERE! There’s nothing new; nothing exciting; nothing inspirational about seeing Comic Sans 400 times a day!

We have also been made aware by some of our friends and family members, that we are slightly ‘font obsessed,’ and constantly gripe when we notice overused fonts in public places. Case in point, we counted 9 different vendors using Papyrus in the course of an hour, at a home and garden show a few weeks back. It was at that point that we knew we had to showcase the 7 fonts that should die!

If you’re a designer and you use any one of the aforementioned fonts willingly, you should be flogged. Kidding…well, kind of…

Unfortunately, some of your clients are going to cling to these evil fonts (Especially Papyrus, for whatever reason), but do your best to steer them toward a perfectly acceptable replacement that will make them stand out from the rest of the pack. If they still resist, uh, well, do what we do…make a mojito and blog about it!

Logo Love

We’re a design company, if you didn’t already know…and we love to design us some good logos! Last year, a client came to us with a very specific logo request; They needed a (complex) image of a dog, vectorized and added to their company name. The final product actually turned out well, but when it came time to print the logo on a few shirts, they decided to invert the design, and well, something very unexpected happened. The features on the dog, all but disappeared. Now, we’ve been in the game for a number of years, and we know a thing or two about good design, but we didn’t see that one coming…

After a few tweaks, we were able to allow for inverse printing, but rather than having one, universal design, we had to produce two versions, for varying types of printing.

So, when we came across this www.istockphoto.com article by Pauly Wood, we felt it was appropriate to share with our fellow designers and clients. It gives some good tips for designing strong, simple & beautiful logos that will translate into any medium.

Oh Happy Day!

Howdy 623 Studio friends, clients & future clients!

We like to speak our mind, share a few tid bits and spread the word about 623 Studio, so we’re jumping on the ‘blog bandwagon,’ albeit, a little bit later than the rest of planet earth, but it’s better late than never, right? So, please check back every now and then for news, updates, promotions, stories and our take on ‘Good Design.’

Cheers!
